Who am I and what in the world am I doing?
My name is Raymond Dean. I live in Springfield, MO, a town best known for…well, I guess the fact that Brad Pitt is from here? I started a little web design company here in the heart of America in 2008. I chose the name Digital Stax for the business simply because I already owned the domain name
I had created a reference directory for a final project in my master’s in library science program. Since this website was a digital online library of sorts, I named it Digital Stax (as in library “stacks”).
It was a great experience creating my own business. But it was wrought with challenges. Web design is an extremely competitive business and designing websites can be a nerve-wracking experience at times. But, with all of the challenges, it is also very rewarding to see your work appreciated and in-demand.
While working as a web designer, I discovered that a large group of people were not being properly served by the web development industry. People and businesses that couldn’t afford (or didn’t want) to spend thousands of dollars to create a website were not being given enough options.
They could either pay a low price for a poor product —or spend more than they could afford on a quality website. Even free website creators could be found. But with anything free — there’s always a catch. I tried to work with clients to get them a low price, but ultimately it’s difficult to make enough money in this field that way.
We also discovered that many clients are willing to put in a little bit of work themselves in order to create a website for a low price. And then the idea for The Website Creator was born. The Website Creator makes it at easy as possible for someone to create a professional website. You just pick a free domain name, pay $40 with PayPal and then check your email for a link to your website. Then you are billed $40 each year and that takes care of everything: hosting, domain name, and email support.
